Going Chemical Free in 2013

One of the things I am most excited about this year is going chemical free! Tonight, I ended up watching a documentary on Netflix called Chemerical. It really drove home all the reasons that I want to take on this project this year.

I have been looking around the house recently figuring out what all there is that I will be getting rid of by undertaking this process and what I will be making to replace those cleaners. There are so many more things around with chemicals in them than you realize. Cleaners, Detergents, Laundry Softeners, Lotions, Shampoo, Deodorant and the list goes on.

So far I have done about three things that I need to do to start accomplishing my goal.

1) I ran out of shampoo and instead of buying more chemical filled stuff- I made my own with castile soap (Dr. Bronner’s), some light oil and distilled water. Super basic.

2) The hubby ran out of deodorant- so I used the opportunity to order some from Amazon that is aluminum free and free of other nasty chemicals. For about 16.00 we got a 4 pack of this deodorant and so far we like it! Awesome Deodorant

3) I went through the cabinet under our kitchen sink and pulled out all the chemical filled cleaners I will be getting out of the house and tackled our laundry area as well. The only chemical filled thing still under the sink is Dawn. I’m figuring out what I will use instead in a lot of my home cleaning recipes before I put it in the garage.

I am really excited about all of it since this will be better for my family and our health. Plus- I get the feeling that getting rid of all the chemicals in my house will also end up making my house/cupboards less cluttered as well!

My next goal is to go through my bathroom cabinets. I plan on getting rid of my make up and eventually getting a stash of chemical free/non toxic makeup and etc. I don’t use it very often but I want to still have a few things around for when I want to get all pretty:)
